Six voices. One stage. Instant backing vocals. The Backups is a creative vocal harmony plugin by Nico Baran designed to transform a single vocal line into a complete six-singer backing vocal arrangement.
Instead of treating harmony generation like a conventional pitch-shifting effect, The Backups presents your backing vocals as a virtual ensemble. Each singer has their own position, harmony part and individual controls, giving you a visual and musical way to build layered vocal arrangements.
Sing one line and let The Backups analyze your performance, determine the musical key and build harmony parts around it. From subtle doubles and octave layers to wide vocal ensembles and full choir-style arrangements, the plugin gives you detailed control over every singer.
The heart of The Backups is its six virtual singers. Each performer represents a complete harmony voice, allowing you to build a vocal arrangement one part at a time.
The stage visually shows which singers are active and which are sitting out. Select any singer to bring them into the spotlight and access their individual harmony controls.
This makes it easy to understand exactly what is happening in your arrangement instead of trying to visualize several harmony voices inside a conventional plugin interface.
Every singer can be shaped independently, giving you the control normally associated with manually arranging multiple backing vocal tracks.
The Backups includes 12 different harmony engines, each designed to give the ensemble a different sonic character. Switching engines changes the behavior and character of the entire vocal group rather than simply changing a pitch-shifting algorithm.
Move between vintage-inspired harmony sounds, more modern processing, granular approaches and hybrid vocal textures to find the right character for your production.
The built-in Key Detective helps The Backups understand the musical context of your performance. Set it to AUTO and the plugin listens to the incoming material, identifies the key and displays its confidence.
When the song changes key, The Backups can recognize the change and let you decide whether the harmony should follow the new key or remain on the current one.
You can also use MANUAL mode when you already know the key and want complete control over the harmonic foundation.
The Backups can listen to a few bars of your source material and analyze the musical information before generating the harmony arrangement.
You can feed it a vocal, lead instrument, piano loop, guitar or sample and allow the Key Detective to determine the harmonic context. For greater precision, you can specify whether the source is a vocal/lead or another instrument.
For producers who want direct harmonic control, The Backups also supports a MIDI chord harmony source. Play or hold the desired chord voicing from your MIDI keyboard and let the six singers follow your harmonic instructions.
This makes the plugin useful not only for automatically generated backing vocals, but also for producers who prefer to compose their harmony parts manually.
Underneath the stage is a dedicated console with eight main controls for shaping the overall vocal ensemble:
The Drive control includes five different saturation modes, allowing you to move from clean vocal processing to more colored and characterful ensemble sounds.
Perfectly synchronized harmony voices can sometimes sound too mechanical. The Backups provides dedicated controls for introducing controlled variation and making the generated ensemble feel more natural.
Use detuning, individual delays, formant adjustments and humanization to create the subtle differences that occur naturally when multiple singers perform the same musical passage.
The six core harmony voices can be expanded into larger stacked arrangements of up to 36 voices, making The Backups useful for creating bigger vocal textures and crowd-style effects.
Go from a tight two-part backing vocal to a wide, dense vocal ensemble without having to manually record dozens of harmony takes.
The Backups includes 15 factory Shows, each providing a complete starting point for a different vocal arrangement and sonic character.
Use them as instant starting points for doubles, harmonies, octave arrangements, choirs, wide vocal stacks and other backing vocal treatments, then customize the individual singers to fit your production.
One vocal line. Six singers. Twelve harmony engines. A complete backing vocal ensemble.
